For information about the local agility club, SMART (the Salinas-Monterey Agility Racing Team), and the trials and fun matches we put on, see its website, Smart Agility.
SMAC is a positive reinforcement-based, competition-oriented agility training program. We stress keeping the agility experience FUN for both dog and handler, and do not permit harsh corrections of any kind. Not all of our students compete or plan to compete, but they all are committed to building their relationship with their dogs. Your progress will be much more rapid, and your learning more rewarding, if you plan to put in time outside of class working with your dog in the ways we recommend (having some agility equipment at home to practice on is helpful but not required).
All breeds and mixes are welcome (agility is not for purebreds only): our student’s dogs have ranged from Papillons to Borzois. However, we do not permit dogs that are aggressive toward people or other dogs, and we do request that you have a reliable recall on your dog before beginning agility training. We also ask that you make sure your dog is physically fit, current on all shots, and without fleas.
